As I know from buying their t-shirts in the past, Threadless.com does many designs using negative space; so I went straight there to see what inspiration they had to offer. I really loved The blue chameleon design, with the full moon as an eye and all the detail in the trees and animals.
I also really love the black and white panda design, which is done in the same style, with equal attention to detail:
The design I have chosen to use for my negative space cut-out is taking inspiration from both of these pieces and carrying on the theme of animals in this work.
I am going to use a simplified version of this t-shirt design by editing out the birds and flowers as they would be impossible to cut out of card. I also think I might use a sponging technique to create a speckled effect around the edge of the fox silhouette, in dark red and orange tones. I am also going to sponge the outer edge of the moon in dark blue or black. I will then hang the cutout from a wire fixture.
This is the finished product of this project. I am very pleased with the colours as I think they are very vibrant however I think I could have made the shape of the fox slightly more detailed as it is quite hard to tell what it is from a distance.
As I turned the brightness up on the light to make the colours more vivid I realised my fox cast an interesting shadow on the screen and thought it would be a nice effect to capture.
I also decided to place the light behind the screen and see what affect that had on my silhouette. I was very pleased I had decided to experiment with this as the final effect was very pleasing.
I am quite pleased with how my fox turned out although I know I could have tried harder and put more effort into this project. It was admittedly a very simple design but I think it was still a very effective one.
